Basic Information

Slovak Cleaner Production Centre

is a professional non-profit non-governmental organisation. Starting from the Slovak-Norwegian project in 1994, the Centre was established within the framework of UNIDO-UNEP Cleaner Production Programme in January 1995. Cleaner production

(CP) means proactive integral approach to the problems of industrial pollution. As a tool for sustainable development, it uses systematic methodology to avoid production of gas emissions, liquid and solid wastes. This often means for company not only solution of problems related to environment, but important economic savings with minimum or low investment, as well.

Achievements of the Centre(until May 31, 1997)

  • Demo-projects / case studies were performed in 50 companies in: regions - Martin, Ruzomberok, Humenne Trnava, and sectors - metal, glass, sugar industries
  • The regional projects are running in Trencin, Ruzomberok
  • The identified immediate (in finished projects) total economic savings are 29,3 millions Sk with important decrease of emissions, waste water and solid wastes of all categories
  • 163 CP experts were trained in long term in-plant interactive training in the country, mainly from industry, approximately 20% of them from government and universities.
  • In co-operation with Faculty of Chemical Technology of STU the Information Centre of Cleaner Production was established to promote CP, support CP project and training activities in the country and to share and use resources in the most effective way.
  • On the base of the previous CP project, the EMS approved by international body according ISO 14001 and BS7750 was introduced in Matador Puchov during only 6 months time period. The factory was approved as the THIRD in the world in June 1996.

SCPC Activities Overview in 1996

    The Slovak-Norwegian Project

    • Third Training Programme: ENVIRO-District 21 Humenne and ENVIRO-City 21 Ruzomberok were finished in June 1996 and extension centres of SCPC were established in these two cities.
    • Fourth Training Programme: ENVIRO-City 21 Trencin and ENVIRO-City 21 Ruzomberokstarted in 1996 and will be finished in June 1997.

    Regional Project ENVIRO-City 21 Trnava in cooperation with STENUM Graz started in April 1996 and was finished by April 3, 1997

      • The First Slovak Cleaner Production Conference in Ruzomberok was organised on June 20, 1996.
      • High Tech and Sustainability - International conference was organised on September 2-4, 1996 in co-operation with SUSTAIN Austria. (29 participants from 11 countries)

      • The Slovak Professional Society for Sustainable Development was established under the roof of SCPC
      • The Club of CP Experts and Managers graduated in framework of Slovak-Norwegian Project was found
      • Information Centre of Cleaner Production and Pollution Prevention on Internet the joint project of Slovak Cleaner Production Centre, World Environment Centre and Faculty of Chemical Technology.
