The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, established in Flint, Michigan
U.S.A., in 1926, is a private, philanthropic organization that
supports programs for charitable purposes.
In Central/Eastern Europe, the Mott Foundation has three current
grantmaking objectives:
- The Foundation seeks to develop appropriate legal frameworks
and political and economic structures to ensure and sustain democracy
and the market economy.
- The Foundation seeks to help prevent conflicts in the region
through training and technical assistance in alternative dispute
resolution methods.
- The Foundation seeks to strengthen the effectiveness of the
nonprofit sector as a whole.
In all three objectives, the Foundation's principle aim is to
build capacity and leadership within local communities and regions,
and at the national level.

The International ESVA Foundation in co-operation with Funen County
(Denmark) and the Lithuanian Association of Adult Educators held
a European Symposium on the role of non-governmental organisations
(NGOs) in the new Europe. This meeting was a strategic one, intended
to enable its participants to exchange knowledge and information,
and to develop common projects of co-operation.
International ESVA Foundation
The International ESVA Foundation (IESVAS) is a grass-root non-profit
organisation under Netherlands law. It has an international board
and its secretariat is established in Budapest. The IESVA has
been called into being to sustain the activities of the ESVA by
furthering of
- research and education
- the transfer of knowledge and dissemination of information
- communication and co-operation within the ESVA itself and
with other NGO's as well as with local, national and international
authorities and profit organisations.
The IESVA also shares the view of the great European teacher Comenius
that education is not limited to educational institutions and
that it is a lifelong activity. In this context, NGOs play an
important role either as spaces of learning, or as actors in public
discourses.
Therefore, the IESVA invited participants of the 1997 ESVA Lithuania
to reflect on the educational functions of NGOs in order to improve
their efficiency and effectiveness. Participants of the 1996 ESVA
Finland have indicated two perspectives in which research, discussions
and co-operation should be directed: the historical process of
transition in the post-communist countries and the European integration.
More specific themes were:
- The role of NGOs in the new Europe
- NGOs and European integration
- The role of NGOs in the learning society
- Effective management of NGOs
- Youth and civil society in post-Communist countries

Are you seeking advice for a successful fundraising campaign?
Do you want to save hours of research time and cut costs?
Do you want information on environmental fonders active in
31 European countries?
Dear Colleague,
As I'm sure you know, environmental agencies are relying more
and more on foundations and corporate funders to support their
work. Environmental Funding in Europe, a new EFC publication,
enables you to tap into this support from one of the fastest growing
funding communities in Europe.
This directory was published expressly to address your funding
information needs in the environmental sector. For the first time,
a wide range of environmental funding information is combined
in one easy-to-use volume. This directory contains 190 detailed
profiles of foundations and corporate funders active in this field,
representing over 294 million ECU (330 million US$) in total environmental
support awarded each year.
Sustainable development, pollution prevention, renewable energy,
eco-tourism, recycling, and natural habitats - wherever you work
in the environment, this book addresses your needs. The coverage
of the environment funding is comprehensive - from alternative
energy through to water pollution.
I am sure you will want to be amongs the first to receive a copy
of this important new directory. Thanks to support from the funding
community, we are able to bring you this directory for only 45
ECU (50 US$).

This collection of NGO contributions, published by NGLS, highlights
dimensions of Agenda 21 implementation at the local level that
might not otherwise be captured by international dialogue. In
their articles, contributors describe NGO projects and other activities

This book studies the way in which NGO-State-Donor relationships
have changed the role NGOs play in development. The book concludes
that there is much evidence to show that NGOs are getting closer
to donors and governments, and more distant from the poor and
