Title of newsletter : Greenway Newsletter Published by : Greenway Year : 1997, Number : 32 UNIVERSITY OF HERTORDSHIRE, HATFIELD, UKFACULTY OF NATURAL SCIENCES AND THE BUSINESS SCHOOL TWO YEAR PGDIP/MSC BY DISTANCE LEARNING IN THE WORKPLACEENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT FOR BUSINESS APRIL 1997 entry This new modular PgDip/MSc programme has been developed by the Department of Environmental Sciences, validated by the University of Hertfordshire (UK) and registered under the Institute of Environmental Management's Signature of Commitment Scheme. The programme comprises eight modules covering six environmental management topics which are studied over eighteen months by distance learning in the workplace. Each module is supported by a comprehensive study pack and a two-day short course (Friday and Saturday) designed to focus on the practical applications of environmental management. An individual project in the workplace, equivalent to four modules, completes the requirements for the MSc. The course uniquely combines environmental and management skills for business, vital for responding to the expanding regulatory framework as well as the implementation of voluntary environmental management standards. The modules are CATs accredited and can be taken individually for Continuous Professional Development purposes. Topics covered include:
The MSc is intended for graduates and professionals who have environmental management responsibilities. This MSc was offered for the first time in April 1996 and the students ranged from senior and middle managers to newly appointed trainees from the pharmaceutical industry, food manufacturing, local authorities, government, the construction industry, metal recycling, paper manufacturing and heating service industry. Visiting speakers on the two-day short courses have included: Professor Richard Welford, Richard Hall (Renlon), Chris Sheldon (ex British Standards), Professor Geoffrey Steeley (ex Head of Environment and Planning, Hertfordshire County Council), Professor Charles Duff (World Business Council for Sustainable Development), Mark Smith (Open University), Dawn Pope (Lucas Industries), Michael Sturgiss (PIRA International), Colin Green (Middlesex University), Dr David Brown (Envirologic), Trevor Smith (National Semiconductor), and David Shillitoe (David Shillitoe Associates). The Department of Environmental Sciences is distinguished by being awarded an excellent in following the recent Teaching Quality Assesment.
