A Commonwealth Intergovernmental Environmental Education Workshop to asses progress since Belgrade and celebrate the 20th anniversary of the UNESCO-UNEP International Environmental Education Programme (IEEP)

The workshop will review developments in international environmental education seen since Belgrade and establish mechanisms to enhance the UNESCO-UNEP International Environmental Education Programme's (IEEP) support to the development of environmental education internationally. The event is expected to be attented by 50-60 Commonwealth participants, which will include government officials in charge of environmental education, academic personnel and other researchers interested in the topic, as well as members of well-established NGOs who wish to familiarise themselves with current developments in the field of environmental education.

OBJECTIVES

The workshop's primary aim is to discuss the extent to which events such as the Belgrade Workshop on Environmental Education, held in 1975, has influenced policies in environmental education, and the meetings which followed it (e.g. Tbilisi, Moscow and Rio), and how all may assist long-term developments in Commonwealth countries. Specifically, the workshop aims to:

* acquaint the audience with the Belgrade Charter as well as other key documents on environmental education, in addition to practices of environmental education, in various countries;

* promote the exchange of information on on-going environmental education policies, as well as other iniciatives in participant countries;

* debate the role of policies in promoting environmental education and the ways such policies may benefit individual Commonwealth nations.

A pre-conference book "Reviewing Belgrade" will be prepared. In addition, it is expected that the results of the debate will be amassed under a "Proceedings" format that will be widely disseminated.
