Introduction

FOR MOTHER EARTH Slovakia

The For Mother Earth movement started its activities at the beginning of December 1994 in Bratislava, Slovakia. We are a free, independent civic group devoted to the protection of the natural environment, human rights and disarmament. We are open to everybody who wants to contribute to our activities.

We are a group of primarily young people who have a common oppinion that we have to actively seek for the protection of our environment and it is necessary to care about the human rights and support disarmament. The reason for the current crissis we see in the philosophy of the unlimited economical growth, seek for the still bigger privat ownership, and in the centralization of the society worldwide. Furthermore it is the change of peoples walues list. We think that politicians are not able to solve these problems but we wellcome the dialogue with them. We are convinced to maintain our political independence.

For Mother Earth fully supports the proces toward the sustainable life and hopes to bring more of its features to the common life of the common people. We are open to the cooperation with other grassroots, with other organizations of the environment and human rights protectors as well as with the scientific experts and the public.

Campaigns of For Mother Earth.

- Camaign For the Clean Air and Energy was part of the movement since its start. We devote it to the propagation of technologies which are accesible to the Slovak citizens and are based on the renewable energy sources. We also try to inform our public about the possibilities of energy savings in the houses and appartements. We try to influence the governmental institutions and support the efficiency steps in the industry. Information which we gather and manage about teh alternative and renewable energy sources, efficiency and the legislation create the information service. We offer this service to the public upon request and it was the source of knowledge for several printed materials. In the year 1996 as the part of the summer Ecocamp we will organize the Clean Energy Brigades. This project will cheply, practically, and efficiently introduce efficiency equipment to the local residents of Mochovce region as the examples of alternatives to nuclear power.

- Antinuclear campaign is the basic part of our activities. We lead an oppozition against the nuclear power in Slovakia and support similar efforts around the globe if we can be of any help. Our activities are primarily devoted to reach the phase out of Bohunice NPP and to stop the completition of the Mochovce NPP. FME was actively taking part on the public participation process organized by the Europea Bank for Reconstruction and Development. We have organized several discussion meeting with the Mochovce region residents, several protest meetings and demonstrations, and walks. We have several times officialy visited the Mochovce NPP and Bohunice NPP to better know the situation and people working there. Bohince NPP was revealed to be possibly on of the 10 most dangerous nuclear power plants in the worl by the US Department of Energy study. Mochovce NPP was shown as not teh least cost and environmental option for the Slovak energy system. As a part of this campaign we support the cheaper, safer, and environmentally healthier projects such as the cogeneration, efficiency, hydro power in the small units, renewable energy sources etc.

Projects of For Mother Earth and our other activities.

- Walk Across Europe for the Nuclear Free World 1995. The walk was organized by the Belgium group . It was its secont transcontinental walk against the use of nuclear energy for both peaceful and military use. The waok started on January 12. 1995 in Brussels and went through 11 countries. Walkers wisited several nuclear power plants and milittary nuclear units and ended up in Moscow on October 12. 1995. In Slovakia the walk took place in May and June. FME was organizing the Slovak part of it. We we cooperating with the local groups in several regions of Slovakia and were distributing booklets and broschures with the information about the environment and the nuclear energy. We tried to influence the public by broading the access to information.

- Ecocamp 1995 and 1996. The Ecocamp 1995 was the second year of the camp which was organized in Sahy town in the Mochovce region. Tha goal was again to distribute information about the energy problems and the consequences of nuclear energy and its alternatives. Part of the camp were several discussions , workshops, games and speeches. In order to show concrete examples we used the solar collector, mobil exhibition of the renewable energy sources and several demonstrative panels. The energy devoted program was also combined with the clean up of the Ipel river and the help to Sahy town. In this summer we will organize the 3rd year of the Ecocamp in Mochovce region. Program will be mostly devoted to informing the public ,espetially local residents, about the Mochovce problems. Part of it will be connected to the problems such as the waste, recycling, deforestation, transit etc. New feature will be organization of the Clean Energy brigades. This brigades will offer the concrete help to local residents with insulation and distribution of energy efficient light bulbs and other equipment. This will serve as an easy example to avoid the use of nuclear energy by energy savings which have a tremendous potential in Slovakia.

- Stop the Nuclear Tests project. This was a protest against the Frances president decision te renew the nuclear tests in the south Pacific Ocean. Part of the project were several protest meetings mostly in front of the French embassy in Bratislava. As a part of it FME asked Slovak residents to boycott French products and joined the international memorandum against all nuclear tests. Our representatives have several times met with the embassy officials and collected signatures under the petition against the French tests. After all the tests we have organized the protest meeting. We will organize similar activities until the definite end of nuclear testing on the planet earth.

- Multivizion ATOM is the combination of the pictures and sound project which broadcasts information about the nuclear energy, its physical consequences, hystory, and the public resistance to it in many different countries. Multivizion also showes the alternatives and new ways of energy production and the possible future. It highlights the dangers of nuclear power toward people and the environment. The project was broadcasted in 10 bigger Slovak cities through January 1996. Multivizion was before organized in Austria and Slovenia. Aftrewards it will be shown in the Czech republic and later this year in Slovakia again.

- Chernobyl: 10th annyversary of the disaster. It is an international campaign of several European groups of nature protectors, charitative organizations and individuals. It contains publishing of variety of materials /e.g. Fingerbook/, posters, organizing of the discussions, exhibitions etc. We demand the halt of further Chernobyl operation. We consider the possibilities of helping the people living in that region. Our representative took part on the international confference about the Chernobyl and nuclear disasters and ways to avoid nuclear energy in east European countries in Kiev.
